Application
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to develop technical skills in moulding and casting through experimentation.
It applies to individuals working on the design and production of three-dimensional projects in industrial and creative contexts. In the creative industries this includes ceramic artists, sculptors and prop makers.
No licensing, legislative, or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.
Elements and Performance Criteria
ELEMENT | PERFORMANCE CRITERIA |
Elements describe the essential outcomes. | Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element. |
1. Develop ideas and designs for moulds and casts | 1.1 Apply knowledge of different casting and moulding techniques to inform ideas 1.2 Research, adapt and use relevant ideas and approaches from other practitioners considering intellectual 1.3 Explore ideas and techniques at the same time to strengthen potential outcomes 1.4 Consider the market potential, required techniques and access to materials, tools and equipment when developing ideas for work 1.5 Refine and confirm ideas based on experimentation, research and collaboration with others |
2. Extend moulding and casting skills | 2.1 Evaluate the potential for new approaches to moulding and casting based on capabilities of techniques already used 2.2 Adapt or introduce new materials, tools and equipment 2.3 Extend the capabilities of moulding and casting through experimentation 2.4 Take account of safety and sustainability considerations |
3. Make moulds and casts | 3.1 Set up or coordinate resources according to safety or other workplace requirements 3.2 Create moulds or casts using techniques and media selected from research and experimentation 3.3 Review and refine ideas and approaches based on ongoing experiences with the production of work 3.4 Use safe and sustainable work practices throughout the production process |
4. Evaluate own work | 4.1 Reflect on own work in terms of conceptual development and technical execution 4.2 Identify areas for future improvement, especially in terms of own skill development 4.3 Discuss completed work with others and respond positively to feedback |
Evidence of Performance
Evidence of the ability to:
develop ideas and techniques using research and experimentation
adapt, extend and combine the capabilities of different moulding materials and techniques
produce finished moulded or cast items that demonstrate a command of techniques using safe and sustainable work practices
evaluate own work through self-reflection and collaboration with others.
Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided at least once.
Evidence of Knowledge
To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:
describe physical properties and capabilities of an extended range of materials and tools used in moulding and casting
outline characteristics of different materials under different treatments and explain the potential of these characteristics to achieve different effects
outline research methodologies used by artists
identify suppliers of moulding and casting resources needed in a professional practice
explain intellectual property and other relevant legislation to be considered if using or adapting ideas from other practitioners
outline work health and safety and sustainability considerations for the set-up and operation of moulding and casting work space.
Assessment Conditions
Assessment must be conducted in a safe environment where evidence gathered demonstrates consistent performance of typical activities experienced in creative arts industry environments. The assessment environment must include access to:
casting and mould-making materials, tools and equipment
a workspace in which items can be constructed safely
research tools and information sources
interaction with relevant people.
Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational educational and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.
Foundation Skills
This section describes language, literacy, numeracy and employment skills incorporated in the performance criteria that are required for competent performance.
Skill | Performance Criteria | Description |
Reading | 1.2, 2.4 | Interprets information from a range of sources to determine appropriate moulding techniques |
Oral communication | 1.5, 4.3 | Uses detailed and clear language to elicit opinions and feedback from others |
Numeracy | 3.1 | Uses simple mathematical formulae to determine resource requirements |
Navigate the world of work | 1.2, 2.4, 3.1, 3.4 | Takes responsibility for compliance with legal, safety and sustainability practices associated with moulding and casting techniques |
Interact with others | 1.5, 4.2, 4.3 | Seeks collaborative relationships with others to discuss own ideas, elicit feedback on completed work and identify skill development opportunities |
Get the work done | 1.1, 1.3, 1.4, 1.5, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 3.2, 3.3, 4.1, 4.2 | Plans and organises requirements for casting production Uses research, exploration and experimentation to achieve different results and extend skills and experience Evaluates technical and conceptual outcomes of final work to identify further improvements |
